Getting Your Name on The Internet

April 6, 2009

Having a website looks really good, and if we’re visual artists, we probably want to look good. It’s a good way to start having a presence on google, and as Russell Brand knows, googling oneself can become addictive. i was SO proud of myself when i first noticed i had a page worth of results.

If you’ve never had a website before, start by putting yourself out there on all the social media sites. This will establish your presence on the internet and will start getting you an audience to bring back to your website or blog.

Here is a list of social media sites to have:
A Facebook fan page (different from a profile, which is often more personal)
Twitter
Linked In

Here is a list of other sites which show up on Google:
Flickr
Blogger
Wikipedia (you can’t do this yourself; more on how to get one in the future)
eBay
Craigslist

If you leave comments on other sites, not only will that link back to your webpage, it will also show up under your google results. This can be good and bad.

The best part is, this doesn’t actually take up a lot of time or effort- you’ll probably be doing these things anyways.
